Good Info On The New Version of Google Analytics

Another informative post from Mike Moran, this one on the new version of Google Analytics. Some interesting stuff and you'll definitely want to check out the complete post for all details and info directly from a Google Analytics expert. Here's a brief clip from the intro:
Last week, I wrote a post on the new version of Google Analytics which drew a response from Avinash Kaushik, Web metrics guru and current Google analytics evangelist. Avinash, well-known for his blog and best-selling book, wrote me to clarify some of what I explained last week. I thought his points were well-taken, so I am revisiting the subject today. Avinash wanted to clarify my discussion of Google Analytics' ability to handle very high traffic volumes. I characterized Google's approach as sampling which dropped data, but Avinash explained it more clearly...

Free App: Software Tool Strips Windows Vista To Bare Bones

Tired of dealing with Microsoft Vista's bloatware, junk apps, poor performance and the like? Check out this post from slashdot: Software Tool Strips Windows Vista To Bare Bones. I have yet to try it out, but the brief clip certainly has me interested:
A free download that can cut Windows Vista's gargantuan footprint by half or more is developing a big following on the Internet. vLite is a configuration tool that lets users automatically delete a lot of unnecessary Vista components — such as Windows Media Player and MSN installer — to pare the OS down to a reasonable size. The software is catching on. An InformationWeek story notes that a forum that asks users to suggest new features has drawn nearly 50,000 page views.

If anyone has any info on this tool, especially users!!, please leave a comment and let us know what you think. Is the free tool worth it? Once you use the tool, does the bare bones version operate as expected? Any hiccups ? Is there a better tool, free or not? let us know!

Boost traffic: How I Used Flickr To Power My Blog and Got 1,496,603 Visits

Check out this interesting clip from Harold Davis on an unusual way of attracting site visitors:

How I Used Flickr To Power My Blog and Got 1,496,603 Visits Why do I show my work on Flickr? There are a number of reasons, but they boil down to 1,496,603. Let me explain my affair with Flickr. When I started Photoblog 2.0 in May 2005, I made the decision to serve my photos out of Flickr. This means that the several thousand photos in my blog are sitting on Flickr's servers, instead of my own server (where I could perfectly well have put them)....

Microsoft to Force IE7 Update on February 12th

Here's some info from the original post by wholeenchilada titled Microsoft to Force IE7 Update on February 12th:

“InfoWorld is reporting that on February 12th, Microsoft will roll out Internet Explorer 7 through Windows Server Update Services to all systems - regardless of whether or not the update had been requested previously. The piece also mentions ways to prevent the update from occurring, for sysadmins who do not want to use IE7 on their systems. Microsoft claims that the decision was made due to ’security concerns’.”

Learn about the SocialRank Blog Rating Service

Mike Moran has a great post on SocialRank, a Blog Rating Service, that includes an interview with Vishen Lakhiani "co-founder of MindValley, the Internet marketing company behind Blinklist and SocialRank". Here's an excerpt:
Typically, a new communication tactic emerges before anyone knows how to measure its value, and blogs have been no exception. You can look at your Technorati rank, or use FeedBurner to measure your subscriptions, but you should expect more metrics to emerge in this new field. One such emerging metric is fromSocialRank, whose badge I display on my site. (My blog breaks into the top 100 marketing blogs now and then.) SocialRank is self-described as the new Web 2.0 network to discover the top stories of the blogosphere within your areas of interest. To learn more about SocialRank, check out this interview with one of its co-founders.

Windows Vista labeled the #1 most disappointing product of 2007

From a post over at Slashdot:

No surprise here, but to complete its humiliation, PC Magazine has declared that Windows Vista is the most disappointing product of 2007. Quoting: ‘Five years in the making and this is the best Microsoft could do?… No wonder so many users are clinging to XP like shipwrecked sailors to a life raft, while others who made the upgrade are switching back. And when the fastest Vista notebook PC World has ever tested is an Apple MacBook Pro, there’s something deeply wrong with the universe.’” Read more of the post here: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/12/18/0125207

Read more from the PC World article, quoted in the above clip - The 15 Biggest Tech Disappointments of 2007 http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,140583-page,5-c,techindustrytrends/article.html

It’s not that Vista is awful. The integrated security and parental controls are nice, and the Aero interface is as whizzy as it gets. Searching and wireless networking are much faster and easier than under XP.

It’s just that Vista isn’t all that good. Many of the innovations the operating system was supposed to bring–like more efficient file and communications systems–got tossed overboard as Microsoft struggled to get the OS out the door, some three years after it was first promised. Despite its hefty hardware requirements, Vista is slower than XP.
